The Science to Modeling

This is a portrait series curated by Sophia Toe (@philo_x_sophia). Sophia aimed to center the dramatics of the human pose.

“As i arched the bend of my neck, i could feel the resistence of muscle pulling away at each other. Every feature of my face was extended. The sensation was very subtle yet abrasive.

Modeling ones face is an art form and an exercise. It takes real concentration and muscle memory. For a good portrait, angle your face, ever so slightly, to extend the jawline. Suck in your lips as if you were sucking a straw. Extend your neck up and then angle the chin downward. Open your eyes. Find a light source that hits your face at a 45° or 135° angle. Make eye contact with the camera.”
